Chat
Chat channels are for conversation that isn't about one task: a team room, a launch, a client. Messages arrive live, and you can see who's typing.
#Finding and joining channels
Chat in the sidebar (g c) lists every channel you can see — the ones you've joined first, then the rest to browse — most recently active first, with how many messages you haven't read.
You can read any channel you can see. Join channel to follow it: only channels you've joined show unread counts, and only their @mentions notify you. Leave channel from its menu when you're done. Some channels include everyone who can see them and can't be left.
Channels with unread messages also appear under Unread in the sidebar, marked with @ where someone mentioned you. Right-click a channel to mark it read, or use Mark all as read.
#Making a channel
Press c c, or the + on Chat in the sidebar. Give it a name (unique in the workspace) and, if you like, a description. Like other things, a channel can live in the workspace or in a Space — guests in that Space can chat there.
Whoever made a channel, and the workspace's admins, can rename it or delete it. Deleting a channel deletes its messages too, so it asks first.
#Writing messages
- Send with your send key (Enter or ⌘/Ctrl+Enter — set in Settings → Preferences → Comments & chat); the other key makes a new line.
- Messages are rich text, with / blocks and @ references, like comments.
- Press Up in an empty box to edit your last message.
- Escape drops a reply you've started.
#A message's menu
Hover a message for:
- Reply — quotes it in your next message.
- Copy text and Copy link — a link opens the channel at that message.
- Mark unread — the channel counts as read only up to just before it.
- Create task from message.
- Edit (your own messages) and Delete (your own, or any message if you're an admin).
When you open a channel, a New line marks the first message you hadn't read.
