Tabs, panes & arrangements
Plan Things Better works like an editor: everything you open — a task, a project, a doc, a view, a channel — opens in a tab, and you can split the window into panes to see several things side by side.
#Tabs
- Click something to open it in a tab. A tab stays as you left it when you switch away and back.
- Drag tabs to reorder them. Right-click a tab for everything you can do with it.
- Pin a tab (t p) to keep it at the front of the strip. Pinned tabs survive "close all" and follow you to other browsers and devices.
- Close a tab with Alt/Option+W (or t q); reopen the last one you closed with t u.
- Jump to a tab with Alt/Option+1–9 (0 for the last), step through them with t h / t l, or find one by name with t t.
- When you open a tab from another tab, a Back link takes you to where you came from while that tab is still open.
#Opening something to the side
Alt/Option+click anything, press Alt/Option+Enter on a focused task, or choose Open to the side from a right-click menu. It opens in a pane beside the one you're in — to the right or below, as set in Settings → Preferences → Panes.
#Panes
- Split the current pane with w v (to the right) or w s (below), or drag a tab to the edge of a pane.
- Move between panes with w and h / j / k / l (or the arrows).
- w z maximizes the current pane, and again restores it. w = makes all panes the same size; w > and w < make one wider or narrower.
- w q closes a pane and its tabs; w o keeps only the current one.
Panes you're not in are dimmed slightly. Change how much with w d, or in Settings → Preferences → Panes.
#Arrangements
An arrangement is a set of panes and tabs saved under a name — "Triage", "Planning", "Review" — that you can switch back to in one step.
- Save the panes you have as a new arrangement with c a (or a s).
- Switch with a a (a list of them) or a 1–9.
- An arrangement is a snapshot: working in it doesn't change it. Press a u to update it with your current panes, or a r to reset it to how it was saved.
- a b goes back to the arrangement you were in before.
Arrangements in the sidebar (g r) shows them all as cards, to switch to, rename or delete. Arrangements are your own — other people don't see them.
#Who else is here
When someone else has the same task, project, doc, view or dashboard open, their avatar appears in its header, so you know you're not alone.
