Getting started

Plan Things Better is a keyboard-first workspace for tasks, projects, docs and chat. This page gets you from signing up to a working setup in a few minutes.

#Sign up and make a workspace

  1. Enter your email on the sign-in page. You're sent a six-digit code — type it in and you're signed in. There are no passwords. You can also continue with Google or GitHub.
  2. The first time, you're asked for your name.
  3. If someone has invited you, you can accept the invitation and go straight into their workspace. Otherwise (or as well), make your own: give it a name and a URL.

You can make more workspaces later from the workspace switcher at the top of the sidebar (Add Workspace), or with c w.

#Find your way around the sidebar

From the top:

  • New task, Search (⌘K / CtrlK), your Inbox, and Tasks — every task in the workspace.
  • Favorites — anything you've starred. It appears once you star something.
  • Unread — chat channels with messages you haven't read.
  • Spaces — rooms for sharing part of the workspace. See Spaces & sharing.
  • Views, Dashboards, Docs, Projects, Labels, Members and Chat — each opens a page listing everything of that kind. Hover a row for a + to make a new one (or, on Members, to invite someone), where your role allows it.
  • Arrangements, Activity, Trash, Settings and Help.

Press [ to collapse the sidebar to icons, and again to bring it back.

#Add your first project and tasks

  1. Make a project: the + on the Projects row, or press c p.
  2. Make a task: New task in the sidebar, or press c t. Give it a title, set any properties you like, and press Enter. Tick Create more to keep the composer open for the next one.
  3. Open a task (click it, or focus it and press Enter) to see its status, priority, assignee, dates, description, sub-tasks and comments.
  4. Switch the layout from the toolbar above the task list — List, Board, Timeline, Calendar or Canvas. See Layouts.

A new task picks up whatever the place you made it from implies: made from a project's page it's in that project; made from a filtered view it gets the values that view filters on, so it shows up there.

#Invite people

Workspace admins invite people from Settings → Workspace Members (or press c m). Pick each person's role — admin, member or guest. See Workspaces & people for what each role can do, and Plans & billing for how many people your plan includes.

#Work in tabs and panes

Everything you open — a task, a project, a doc, a view — opens in a tab. Alt/Option+click opens something to the side, in a second pane. See Tabs, panes & arrangements.

#Next steps

  • Press ? for the keyboard shortcut reference.
  • Read Tasks and Statuses, priorities, types & labels to understand the model.
  • Build a saved view for the list you work from every day.
  • Add a dashboard to see progress at a glance.
  • If your account menu (bottom of the sidebar) shows Take a tour, it walks you around the app.
