Canvas

The Canvas layout draws your tasks as a graph, so you can see how work connects: what's waiting on what, what sits under what, and what's related.

#Lines

LineMeans
Arrow, in the accent colorBlocks — the task at the start has to finish first.
Thin, mutedParent of — a task and its sub-task.
DashedRelated.

Lines in the toolbar hides any of the three kinds.

#What the canvas points out

  • Blocked on a card: something it waits on isn't finished. Ready: everything it waited on is done. A finished blocker's line fades.
  • A Blocks line turns red when the blocker is due after the task it blocks starts (or is due) — a date conflict.
  • Links to tasks the view leaves out can't be drawn; the card counts them, and clicking the count lists them.
  • A task with sub-tasks shows its progress and has a toggle that folds its sub-tasks into a count.

#Arranging it

The toolbar's arrangement choice lays the graph out as a Dependency flow or a Hierarchy, each left to right or top to bottom.

With Display → Grouping set to Status, Priority, Type, Assignee or Project, each group is a box of its own. Set it to None for one graph.

  • Drag the background, or scroll, to pan.
  • Pinch, or Ctrl/Cmd+scroll, to zoom. Fit shows everything.

The control at the top left chooses what dragging between cards does. It's Off to start with, so clicking around never changes anything. Pick Blocks, Parent of or Related, then drag from one card's handle to another card — or tap two cards — to link them.

#Cards

Cards are the same as on a Board: click to open, Cmd/Ctrl+click or Shift+click to select, click a chip to change it, right-click for the task's menu. Display → Display properties chooses what they show.

Tip: root:SP-0042 layout:canvas in the query bar shows one task and everything connected to it.
